Kenya study abstract [Neurath 2005a] CN 12/11/2015 1 242 Abstracts of papers accepted for XXVIth ISFR Conference FLUORIDE THERAPY FOR OSTEOPOROSIS REVISITED Abstract number: Present in only trace amounts in soft tissues of the body, fluoride 31 normally accumulates to a significant extent with increasing age in XXVIth ISFR Conference metabolically active skeletal and dental tissues. With this fact in mind, elevated doses of fluoride (e.g., 50–60 mg NaF/day) have been advocated for treatment of post-menopausal and old-age onset osteoporosis, even though this condition is known to result not from lack of fluoride but mainly from long-term dietary deficiencies, inadequate physical activity, and hormonal imbalances. Although relief from pain associated with osteoporosis by fluoride therapy has been reported, and bone density is increased by such treatment, the resulting bone lacks tensile strength and is often more susceptible to fractures. Under certain circumstances fluoride can also promote arterial calcification leading to thromboses as first described by Rokitansky in 1842. Consequently, for these and other reasons, the use of fluorides for treatment of osteoporosis remains controversial scientifically.number: Present in only trace amounts in soft tissues of the body, fluoride 31 normally accumulates to a significant extent with increasing age in XXVIth ISFR Conference metabolically active skeletal and dental tissues. APPENDIX 4. Kenya study, full, with introduction [Neurath 2005b]

The attached study was discussed in the NRC 2006 review, but was criticized because the osteosarcoma rates of Kenyan provinces were not age-‐adjusted. However, Kenyan provinces had large populations and it is unlikely there were large differences in ag distribution between provinces. Furthermore, the differences in osteosarcoma rates between provinces were as large as 400%. It is unlikely age ...

Correlation between dental fluorosis incidence and osteosarcoma incidence amongst provinces of Kenya and Association between fluoridation and osteosarcoma in Malaysia

The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) submission “Revisiting the FluorideOsteosarcoma connection in the context of Elise Bassin’s findings: Part II” to the National Research Council (NRC) contained a postscript about an osteosarcoma epidemiology study in Kenya. This work by Bovill et. al. (1985) was never considered by the NRC in 1993, perhaps because the study was not specifically looking for a co...
